QVEC Radios

QV operates numerous radio transmitters at a multitude of sites.  These systems are unique and controlled by different methods.  For many years, QV only operated off of our original transmitter location on Rt. 6 in South Killingly.

Due to the large number of different frequencies we operate on, a majority of our base stations are multi-frequency base stations.  These high power units usually transmit at 250 watts.  The dispatcher is able to select which frequency the radio is on at the console.

Our "Main Tower" on Rt. 6 in Killingly is controlled from the dispatch center via telephone lines.  Our site in Griswold as well as our shared sites in Norwich (Plain Hill) and Ashford (Pumpkin Hill) are controlled by radio links.

We were fortunate several years ago to participate in negotiations with the State Police for use of their microwave system.  During their planning stages, we were allowed certain channels and antenna spots on the tower sites they were building as part of their new radio system.  In fact, QV was one of the first organizations to actively go on-line on their system.

The State Police helped us out a great deal as this allowed us access to tower sites in Union (Bald Hill), Sterling (Ekonk Hill), Brooklyn, (Bush Hill) and Thompson (Mountain Hill).  See a pattern here?  Housing our radios at these sites allows us to have generator backup climate control and security systems in place.
